Lovetarantulas is raising production funds for a new tarantula documentary: Andrew Smith’s POECILOTHERIA : Tiger Spiders of SRI LANKA.

We are back with a brand-new tarantula documentary and one that is dear to my heart. I first travelled to Sri Lanka 35 years ago on invitation from the Sri Lankan Agricultural Board to identity a spider that was causing concern in their coconut plantations. It was of course, the genus Poecilotheria and over that month-long visit, I took the very first images, in the field, of a Poecilotheria spider. 10 years later, I was back with a video camera and (with restored footage from that period) we will tell you the story of that remarkable research project. But that is only a small part of the new documentary, filmed over the entire island during November 2025. We cover all 6 species found on Sri Lanka : P. ornata, P. fasciata, P. smithi, P. subfusca, P. rajaei and P. srilankensis all in stunning 4K. We also discuss the P. subfusca highland/lowland problem.

This documentary is invaluable to both enthusiasts, scientists and conservationists who wish to know more about this beautiful genus, but whose species are becoming increasingly critically endangered.

These documentaries were crowd funded by many of you - and they have turned out to be the most popular productions we have made to date.

If successful, we can promise you another epic tarantula documentary that will have you on the edge of your seat because like all of our films, our new Sri Lankan documentary is just as you like it - muddy boots out there in the field searching for tarantulas!

If you cherish what lovetarantulas is all about then please consider becoming a Kickstarter supporter or even a Producer and help us with however much you can afford. In doing so you will go onto our role of honour in the credits and, depending on which reward tier you opt for, you will also have access to all sorts of lovetarantulas goodies. If you have a business associated with the tarantula hobby, why not become an Executive Producer and have your company logo at the start of our documentaries? In doing so you are telling the world you are proud to support ground-breaking, intelligent tarantula documentaries that increase our knowledge of these wonderful spiders.

Only lovetarantulas.com does what we do, and we can only do it with your support.

Thank you.
